Your Weekend: Best Upcoming Events
Looking for something to do with yourself, your friends, or your family this weekend?
Want some artistic weekend plans?
Here are my recommendations of events and art shows.
Saturday
12-1 pm: A Curated Tour of FOLK
Join me for a private tour of over 50 works of folk art.
Learn the stories behind the art and artists, and practice “close looking”. Followed by a Q&A and free merch!
2-5 pm: Bad Art Club
Learn illustration techniques for words & images.
Draw pet portraits in a cartoony and surreal style. Bring a picture of an animal you would like to illustrate! We will also turn words into illustrations.
7-11 pm: Flat Baroque
An Art-centric Burlesque Show and Figure Drawing Workshop.
Join me at the Tap Yard Raleigh for a night of art, excitement, and entertainment! All to benefit local non-profit and artist collective, CoLab Raleigh. I work with CoLab often, and one of the founders was our Bad Art Club: Cyanotype guest artist.
This showcase will feature burlesque and draglesque performances. Live painting and figure drawing sessions occur before the show and during each intermission.
All Month Long
To Take Shape and Meaning
Form and Design in Contemporary American Indian Art
North Carolina Museum of Art, March 2–July 28, 2024
One of my favorite exhibits this year. “Shape and Meaning” features work by 75 Indigenous artists from over 50 tribes in the US and Canada.
The Figurative Sculpture of Syd Ginsberg (1928-2023)
Ambleside Gallery in Greensboro, March 1-31, 2024
Syd Ginsberg pursued art studies at Cooper Union while working during the day. Her art led her from New York to Mexico, where she lived for decades before returning to the North Carolina in 2018. In 2023 she passed, leaving a legacy of sculptures.
Ginsberg’s art is represented by Bad Art Club guest artist Onicas, who has championed her work for years. One piece is on view in our FOLK Show. View more at Ambleside in Greensboro.
Thank you
To each person who called, emailed, wrote a note, and donated to support TJ & I through a crisis last weekend, thank you.
I was physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally unwell after I heard the news of a bomb threat at Artspace. I spent a day in bed and the next 3 days with a constant migraine. I felt a mix of anger, grief, sadness, frustration, and anxiety.
The most helpful thing was talking about the incident with people in my personal and work circles, and hearing from people that care.
I am still processing and wondering what this will mean in a highly political year.
It was a huge relief to know that the people in this newsletter are not afraid to witness grief, hear truth, provide support, be honest about their feelings, and work together.
I value each one of you and have been speaking to everyone about the supportive actions of the folks in the Bad Art world. I feel heartened by you. I am grateful in every aspect of my being. I don’t feel alone.
I believe in reciprocity. If you need me, want to talk, want to come to a class for free, or think of ways I can support you, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
In strength,
Shady
