Bad Art Club Recap
1. Surreal Writing
We played surrealist writing games such as introducing ourselves in a surreal way (ex. “I am Shady, a mermaid living under a rock laying on a bed of pearls.”) and writing ads for something no one would want, like an oily mud puddle!
2. Guest Artist, Gideon Young: Haiku and Flute!
Guest artist Gideon Young taught us about modern haiku, wowed us with an amazing flute and poetry performance, and guided us in writing our own haiku poems to hang on bamboo, inspired by Japanese prayer trees. Thank you, Gideon!
You can find Gideon's work on his website at GideonYoung.com.
3. September Bad Art Club
Next BAC we will focus on creative journaling and DIY art! Our guest artist is Caleb Gorham, a graphic designer from Durham, North Carolina. He will lead us in a creative journaling project and show us an easy way to bind paper to make a journal.
New ART!
“Myself” Zine: A Memoir of Holly Hill
I printed a new zine about my experience in a psychiatric hospital, called “Myself”. It reads like a short, frank memoir and is available thanks to a grant from the Artist Link Project for Artists with Disabilities. If you would like a copy, email me at hishady@pm.me and I will mail you one. The cost is pay-what-you-can.
Uproar Festival Recap
Leading the postcard-making workshop during Uproar Festival’s closing reception was great. Participants got a taste of Bad Art Club and created custom postcards for the festival by drawing, painting, marking, and doodling.
Congratulations to the $10,000 Juror's First Place Winner: "New Money" by Davis Erickson. His work was installed on the exterior of the Old Orange County Jail in Hillsborough during Uproar.
“There once was a beautiful proposal back in 2013 to pay tribute to Harriet Tubman, her unsurpassed bravery and hard work towards abolition, by featuring her portrait on the US $20 bill. 10 years later, this fabulous concept has yet to come to fruition in the mint. I have been developing a technique for mimicking the look of intaglio etching using spray paint for the purpose of creating a mural of Harriet Tubman featured on the US $20 bill.” -Davis Erickson artist statement
Thank you Art Therapy Institute!
Art Donation from ATI fills our supply closet
We are sad that the Art Therapy Institute (ATI) is closing, but we are grateful for their generosity as they sunset the organization. They provided BAC with $100s of supplies. We provide free supplies for ALL our classes with no fee in order to make BAC as accessible as we can financially. We can not say thank you enough to Courtney and Hayley. We look forward to what the staff from ATI do next, we know it’s going to be amazing.
