The Recap in 4
1. Rubbing
We created texture from rubbings, also known as frottage: a surrealist method that involves creating a rubbing of a textured surface using a pencil or other drawing material. (Tate Modern)
2. Guest Artist: Bethany Bash
Guest artist, Bethany Bash, spoke about her public art pieces, creative process, using art to address themes of white supremacy and its harmful impacts, and her latest art combining birds and self-portraits. She then led us through a photo transfer activity using graphite pencils and printed images. Thank you Bethany!
You can find Bethany's work on her website at BethanyBash.com.
3. Skills & Activities
We practiced photo transfers by using a printed image, covering it with graphite by coloring it in with a pencil, then tracing the image through the other side of the paper.
4. August Bad Art Club
Next BAC we will focus on writing! Our guest artist is Gideon Young, a member of the Carolina African American Writers’ Collective, a Fellow for A+ Schools of North Carolina, a K-12 Literacy Specialist, and a stay-at-home dad. He will lead us in creating his specialty: haiku :)
2 things I’m doing
TJ and I have art in the Uproar Festival of Public Art. The focus of our piece is LGBTQ+ existence and resistance, and is called “You Can Not Intimidate Us Out Of Existence”.
Uproar is a new arts festival in Orange County, NC, taking place from July 14 – August 12, 2023. 60 bold outdoor works of art will be showcased downtown in Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Hillsborough. Cash prizes are awarded based on public voting and a jury panel of experts.
Our pieces are located at Carrboro Town Commons.
I am teaching Intro to Canva and Graphic Design on Saturday, August 19th at Eno Arts Mill from 2-5 pm. Learn how to create digital art, design products, and use basic AI.
