Making Your Work Accessible Benefits Everyone, Including You
Accessibility benefits people of all abilities.
Who does accessibility benefit?
Accessibility focuses on people with disabilities, however accessibility improves usability for everyone.
For example:
Correct color contrast benefits people in bright sunlight or in a dark room, as well as people with visual impairments.
Captions benefit people in noisy and quiet environments, as well as people who have hearing loss.
Alt text benefits people whose images don’t load on their device, as well as people using screen readers.
Accessibility also addresses age-related limitations, benefiting a wider range of individuals. (Source)
There are 2 days left to register for my Accessibility Class. This class is good for EVERYONE to learn how to make our work more accessible. Your job may be willing pay for it as professional development.
Here are two examples from my life of how accessibility improved outcomes for all:
At an event I was planning I advocated for opening an accessible entrance. I made the signage, and the day of the event, the band set up in front of the door. After advocating to move the band’s location so this entrance could remain open, the entrance became the most-used door of the night. This entrance created a better flow for the event. It benefited everyone, including people using mobility devices or that had increased risk of falling.
I often use a microphone when teaching. I used to struggle to get people to transition from tallking in small groups to listening to my next instructions. The microphone helped people hear my cues better, as well as making my voice clearer for people with hearing impairments.
If you want to learn more, I hope to see you Thursday!
