Bad Art Market is TOMORROW + a $500 thank you
Bad Art Market is almost here! Get a leg up on your gift-giving this year.
Over the next few newsletters, I will share exerpts from my week at the John C. Campbell Folk School learning printmaking and letterpress. Many people describe JCCFS as a lifechanging experience, and I agree. I was lucky to attend on scholarship and I am eager to return.
The Round House & Picking Type
When I arrived at John C. Campbell Folk School, I was informed that I was staying in Hubbell House, the the only round house on campus. I love round and curved architecture as it reminds me of women in design and indigenous architecture.
That night we had our first class in the printmaking studio; a clean, wood building with a classroom space and backroom with 6 manual printing presses. Our instructor was the INCREDIBLE Jessica White. I could not have asked for a more skilled, kind, and knowledgable teacher.
Our first task was to “pick type” and typeset our names. To begin the type-picking process you grab giant drawers of lead type and pick up each tiny letter one by one. You place them in a “composing stick” upside down and backwards. You manually add spaces as well. At first this was challenging for all of us. As the week went on, I found picking type quite meditative.
Next newsletter, I will write about making my first print.
🥳 Bad Art Market is one day away 🥳
We are ONE DAY away from Bad Art Market! We hope you will join us TOMORROW October 21 at Eno Arts Mill from 12-4 pm. Not to brag, but we have some amazingly talented artists vending with us and we don’t want you to miss out on all the art.
(Plus, it’s almost gift giving season, so why not get started early?)
The following artists will be at BAM. Come see more of their work and speak to them about their creative practice.
TJ Mundy
TJ’s abstract art uses vibrant colors, weighted lines, and intuitive movements to create automatic linework and asemic writing that stems from processing their lived experience as biracial trans and neurodivergent. In their digital work, they use bold and eye catching imagery to convey the importance of the issues they represent.
They will be selling:
- Original paintings and prints
- Artist trading cards and stickers

Plants by Terri, Rocks by James
Terri and James (my parents) are Raleigh locals who love to garden, explore galleries and estate sales for hidden treasures, and make art! Terri has potted up some of her thriving indoor plants and painted the terracotta pots with all sorts of beautiful designs. James has painted rocks with colorful and intricate patterns that’ll be sure to bring color to any garden, bookshelf, or walkway. All proceeds from their sales to go to the Bad Art Club Fund.
Shady Kimzey
I am a teaching and working artist based in Efland, NC with over a decade of experience in facilitation and intuitive art-making.
“My work often depicts themes of intuition, symbolism, surrealism, society, and the natural world, while drawing inspiration from pop culture and the future. Art is my healing practice, contributing to my mental well-being and empowering me to express myself authentically.”
I will be selling:
- Original letterpress prints
- Stickers, buttons, and patches
- Zines and bookmarks
- Paintings
- Weavings
